Stripe's dashboard vs a dedicated MRR tracker

Updated 2026-08-04

The most under-considered option: just use Stripe. It's free, it's accurate, and you're already logged in.

For a lot of people that's the right answer. Here's where it stops being one.

Gap 1: volume is not MRR

Stripe's prominent figures are payment volume for a period — everything charged, including annual payments at full value and one-off charges.

A $490 annual subscription shows as $490 of volume in the month it billed. As MRR it's $40.83. If you have meaningful annual plans, volume and MRR diverge substantially. Full explanation: why your Stripe dashboard number isn't your MRR.

Gap 2: it only knows Stripe

Obvious but decisive. If you also sell through the App Store, Gumroad, Lemon Squeezy or PayPal, Stripe's dashboard shows a fraction of your business, and you're back to a spreadsheet. This is the actual reason most people end up wanting another tool. See the integrations.

Gap 3: it's a web dashboard

Stripe's mobile app exists and is fine. But it's built around payment operations — charges, disputes, customers — rather than "what's my recurring baseline?"

Gap 4: no unified sale alerts

Stripe can notify you about Stripe. It cannot tell you an App Store subscription started or a Gumroad sale landed. If you sell in several places, you either run several notification streams or none.

When Stripe's dashboard is enough

Genuinely, if all of these are true, don't buy anything:

That describes a lot of early-stage businesses, and adding a tool would be overhead.

Frequently asked

Does Stripe show MRR?

Stripe surfaces subscription metrics in places, but its headline dashboard figure is typically gross payment volume for a period, which includes annual payments at full value and one-off charges.

Do I need a separate MRR tool if I only use Stripe?

Not necessarily. If you are Stripe-only and comfortable with its reporting, you may not need anything else. The gap opens when you sell elsewhere or want normalised recurring revenue at a glance.
